Smart Bracelets and Spiritual Fitness

Technological advancements in our world today have helped to make life easier and better for man. From the way we eat, work and play, technology has made an undeniable impact.
This post however is not about technology but places emphasis on the state of our spiritual lives as believers.
I have been a lover of anything that simply makes life less cluttered and simple, little reason why I gravitated towards the lot who use fitness watch. It boasts of monitoring your steps, gives a sedentary reminder and also checks blood pressure and oxygen levels. All these ensure that you are fit according to the World Health Organization standard. A key feature popular with fitness watch users is the daily target of 10000 steps.

Physically Fit and Spiritually Fit
When the fitness watch I purchased lasted only about 10hours instead of the 3days battery life promised, I was burdened with the task of frequently charging the device so that it kept me updated with how I was doing physically with regards to fitness.
After work, on the evening of a Wednesday, I got home and unplugged my bracelet to charge it then a thought ran through my mind.

What if we had a device that monitors our spiritual fitness and helps us to know when we begin to gather spiritual fat that makes us lethargic to spiritual exercise and prey to lust and temptations which lead to the eventual disaster of falling into sin and losing our sonship rights in redemption.
What if we had a way to check and monitor our spiritual fitness level?

Spiritual Fitness
Physical fitness is good but spiritual fitness is most profitable. The state of our souls – more than our BMI (Body mass index) blood oxygen, sugar levels and muscle mass – should be high on our priority list.
If a godly life is to be maintained we must therefore ensure that we are consistently building habits and partaking in exercises that keep our mind and hearts stayed on God.

The Bible warns that we must take heed if we think we stand lest we fall. With exercise it is also true that when we stop building consciously our muscles they atrophy and we lapse to the state and shape of our past . More reason why a wise man once quipped ” There’s no holiday in our walk with God”

Here are a few key areas to have regular check ups and monitor so that we stay spiritually fit and live our best lives as God desires for us.

Godly Fear
Fear or phobia restricts us from taking action. When we have the fear of God on the other hand it restrains us from doing anything that God frowns at out of reverence and respect for him. We must make sure we check the state of our hearts so that our conscience is not seared and hardened towards God that we begin to harbor disregard for his voice in our hearts and actions.

Love
Love at it’s purest seeks the best, satisfaction and pleasure of another above self. When our love for God is in place, we are internally motivated to live for him, give to him and do his biddings without any coercion. The pleasure of the God we love becomes our delight.

He becomes not just what our life is about but the reason we are living. The things we love is a reflection of where our heart and pleasure lies. We must make sure with the help of the Holy Spirit and daily self examination to watch the things we spend our time on as this shows what we love.

God’s word
The word of God is like a chart that shows you how you are doing with your fitness program or a mirror that shows you what you currently look like with the ideal image of what your fit self should look like. It doesn’t make us fit in itself but it’s power lies in it’s instructions, admonitions, corrections and directions it offers in a bid to keep us fit when we obey and adhere to the lifestyle it prescribes. A regular and consistent consultation and conference with God’s word will help us to keep and maintain a healthy spiritual well beign with Christ.

Prayer Pattern
A life of burning passion, zeal and yearning for God is fueled through prayer. Prayer is our portal of communication and connectivity to our creator. When we begin to pray less the posture of our hearts lean towards a dependence on self and God begins to take a secondary position in our lives as he becomes the last resort instead of our first call.

Prayer edifies, cleanses, refreshes, purifies and builds us up spiritually. When our prayer tank goes down we begin to catch spiritual colds which make us susceptible to the attacks of the enemy. In order to stay spiritually fit our prayer altar must be kept continually burning.

Conclusion
So far we have established the need to stay spiritually fit and areas to monitor so that we can always measure how fit we are spiritually and take the required action. Let me mention here that no life is worth living except the life of godliness and moral excellence. My earnest prayer is that you will grow spiritually and shed off every spiritual fat. May you grow daily into the strong man and woman of the spirit that God has called you to be.
